What began as a routine custody visit ended in the kind of horror that leaves a community shattered. Three young sisters full of life and promise were found dead in a forest. Their father, a former Army soldier, disappeared.
The Disappearance
Travis Decker picked up his three daughters for a scheduled visit. It wasn’t out of the ordinary. But when he failed to return them on time, their mother knew something was wrong. She told police this had never happened before and that he’d recently been struggling with his mental health.
At first, there wasn’t enough evidence to issue an Amber Alert. Decker was a custodial parent and there were no immediate signs of danger.
That assumption would prove to be fatal.
The Search and the Discovery
Law enforcement launched a search the next day. Decker’s white GMC Sierra was located near a remote campground in the Okanogan Wenatchee National Forest. About 75 yards from the vehicle, deputies discovered something far worse.
The bodies of his daughters ages 9, 8, and 5 were found lifeless in the woods. Their wrists had been zip tied. Authorities believe they died from asphyxiation.
Decker was nowhere to be found.
Who Is Travis Decker
Decker is a former full-time Army soldier who transitioned to the Washington National Guard. In recent years, he had stopped attending mandatory drills and was in the process of being discharged for misconduct. Officials described him as someone with extensive military training.
He is now wanted for three counts of murder and kidnapping.
A Failed Alert System
The case has raised serious questions about child alert protocols. Initially, police did not issue an Amber Alert because the criteria suspected abduction and immediate danger weren’t met. Decker was a parent with visitation rights. No one imagined the worst until it was too late.
Washington State Patrol officials have since acknowledged the tragedy and say the system may need to evolve to better protect children in similar circumstances.
A Devastated Community
The three girls were students at Lincoln Elementary School. Grief spread across the district as counselors were brought in and memorials appeared at the school. Parents and teachers mourned together. Shock turned to anger. How could this happen How did no one stop it
Ongoing Search and Reward
The US Marshals and Chelan County Sheriff’s Office continue to search for Decker. A reward of up to 20000 is being offered for any information that leads directly to his arrest. He is considered extremely dangerous.
If you’ve seen Travis Decker or know where he might be, do not approach him. Call 911 immediately.
Why This Story Matters
This isn’t just a story about one father and his children. It’s about how systems meant to protect the vulnerable sometimes wait too long. It’s about the signs that get missed. The warnings unheeded. And the lives that are lost as a result.
Three little girls didn’t come home that night. And the man responsible, their father, is still out there.
